🌏 Why Yosakoi Connects the World

Hello, this is Tomo from the Kokuyosa Project Committee!

Have you ever heard the word Yosakoi? It’s an energetic and colorful dance festival born in Japan. Starting in Kochi Prefecture, Yosakoi has now spread all over the world! Today, we’d like to share why Yosakoi teams are forming across the globe and what makes it so appealing.

🌸 What is Yosakoi?

🌸 Yosakoi’s Roots: From Kochi
Yosakoi originated in Kochi in 1954 as a symbol of post-war recovery. It brought communities together, revitalized the streets, and gave people the courage to smile and dance again.

🌸 The Charm of Yosakoi
Yosakoi is for everyone — regardless of experience, age, gender, or nationality. It creates a natural sense of community as dancers and spectators alike share in the joy and energy of the performance.

🌸 The Four Key Elements of Yosakoi
1️⃣ Naruko
The naruko is a small wooden clapper, held in each hand to create a rhythmic sound while dancing. Originally used in farming to scare away birds, it has become an iconic symbol of Yosakoi, and every dancer carries them.

2️⃣ Costumes
Yosakoi costumes are incredibly diverse — from traditional kimono styles to modern, ethnic, or carnival-inspired designs. Each team creates its own unique, colorful look, delighting audiences with vibrant visual impact.

3️⃣ Music
Yosakoi music blends the traditional with the contemporary. Taiko drums, shamisen, and flutes are often mixed with rock, pop, hip-hop, and EDM. Many teams compose their own original songs, bringing their unique vision to life.

4️⃣ Dance (Enbu)
Yosakoi dances feature creative choreography, powerful movements, synchronized group formations, jumps, spins, and the lively sound of naruko and swirling costumes. Many teams even incorporate a theme or story into their performance.

All you need to do is embrace the spirit and have fun!

🌍 Crossing Oceans: Yosakoi Around the World

Although rooted in Japanese tradition, Yosakoi is free from rigid rules, allowing anyone to join and adapt it to their culture and style. Its open-mindedness and creativity have made it a global phenomenon, spreading to Canada, the U.S., Europe, Asia, and beyond.

International students, Japanese communities abroad, and local fans of Japanese culture are dancing together, transcending language and borders to enjoy the magic of Yosakoi.

✨ Why Yosakoi is Loved Worldwide:
✅ A free and inclusive style anyone can join
✅ Welcoming to all ages, genders, and nationalities
✅ The unifying rhythm of naruko
✅ The infectious energy that lifts both dancers and spectators

These are the reasons why Yosakoi continues to capture hearts around the world.

✨ The Special Meaning of KOKUYOSA

This year at KOKUYOSA, Yosakoi teams from around the globe will gather here in North America. Until now, the only way to experience this kind of worldwide Yosakoi connection was to travel to Japan.
Now, we bring the teams together here — showcasing the beauty of Yosakoi to the people of North America while deepening cross-cultural friendships and building a truly global community.

KOKUYOSA is more than just a festival.
It’s a place of cultural exchange, friendship, and unity — a two-day celebration where you’ll truly feel how Yosakoi connects the world.
